This is something that came up on the Daily Post – a way to follow blogs that are not on WordPress. A lot of great tatting blogs are on Blogspot and other places which (probably due to my limited internet skillz…) I have never been able to follow successfully. You have to ‘claim’ your own blog to prove that it’s yours – which is what the link above is about.
Back to our regularly scheduled programming.
Lace knitting is one of those things I was always going to do ‘one day’. I loved the look of it, but felt hugely intimidated and resigned myself to drooling over other people’s shawls. Last Sunday I commented on this blog and salpal1 came back and said ‘Can you knit, purl, yo and k2tog? Then you can knit lace. It just requires patience and loads of stitch markers..’
Really? I have basic knitting skills – I have even knitted wearable garments (just not wear-them-in-public garments) I had a library book on lace knitting. (I was looking at the pictures, okay?) I thought about it for a few days, then grabbed the nearest piece of scrap wool and tried it out.
She’s right!
Here is my first attempt. Don’t laugh. It was just a practise piece in double knitting on 4,5 needles. It has holes where I meant them to be! (Mostly)
It is also not quite the dreadful brown colour that came out on the photograph. Also please ignore the piece in the middle where the right side mysteriously became the wrong side…

Lovely! Really lovely. There’s something about lacy knitting, isn’t there?
Lots of books around which are like dictionaries/encyclopaedias of knitting with photos of squares of design and their stitchwork next to them. I used to collect some many, many years ago.
I do Bloglovin too but also copy web addresses into wordpress to get them to come on reader – bit of overkill I suppose 🙂

Yay, congratulations! People never really believe how simple doing needlework is! If you manage the basic steps, then you usually know as much as you need to make the most intricate things 🙂 And after tatting – knitting lace is pretty fast!! We might not have to wait long to see what lacy plans you have 😉

I also mess up hand knitting rib, usually ending up with a lovely pattern that is not rib. so I rib on my knitting machine. And, yes, I love knitting lace patterns on my knitting machine, or by hand.

Good luck with your lace knitting adventure!! I’ve gone back to every tatting video I’ve ever watched – also bought some shuttles to see if that was easier for me – I need more patience and practice – that will be all you need too to master lace knitting! While I was looking for tatting videos I stumbled onto making Armenian Needle lace – I had to step away from the computer before I jumped into another lace making method! 😀
I know just what you mean with the Armenian Lace. I just go ‘Ooooh, pretty!’ and some hours and megabytes of downloads later my hard drive is bulging at the seams. 😉
Lace knitting should be fun for you and doesn’t need to be squared up.

Salpal1 is right. If you can do the basic stitches, you can knit lace. Just takes a lot of patience, paying attention to the pattern and lots of stitch markers. I haven’t knitted lace in a while, but itching to get back to it after you talking about it and all the lovely shawls Salpal1 makes. Looking forward to seeing your lacey project 🙂 You can do it!

I really enjoyed reading this blog post! I love knitting as well and am knitting a summer cardigan for myself. Knitting is mediation for me. I love I can calm down and think lots of stuff while knitting. Most of the time I get inspiration for my painting while knitting. I am so looking forward to seeing your lacy stuff!!!
