I’ve been in and out a few times over the last months, trying to work out where everything went. I’m no lover of sudden changes, and obviously wasn’t around when Things Happened.
I’ve been dodging the Block Editor for ages. I was going to start a music blog. Found I couldn’t use Classic Editor and just left it.
I absolutely hate things flickering and flashing at me. If I could shoot that little pop-up block I would. I did manage to find a tutorial on the block editor, but would have possibly got more out of it if it hadn’t kept telling me just how much FUN I was having. Not so much.
All I want to do is write a blog post, and put in a photo or two every now and then. That’s it. I have never wanted SyntaxHighlighter Code (front end only) in my life, and am unlikely to start now.
Possibly 2020 – apart from the year (first year…) of the pandemic – was the year of ‘let’s change our website and drive everyone up the wall’. I have been watching Ravelry doing a slow crash-and-burn with absolute horror. When (if…) I can figure out how, I will go back through my old posts recommending them and post warnings to stay away. I will do a blog post about it if I can get comfortable using the block editor, which at the moment seems unlikely.
And for some reason I cannot edit a draft post! I had an almost complete post that I can’t update. I had to work around using ‘cut and paste’ and a word document. I don’t doubt I am doing something wrong, but am very disinclined to put the necessary work in to find out what.
And please don’t anyone come in and tell me ‘But it’s so easy!’ I will not be responsible for my reply.

Don’t other blog companies change their software, too?
I’m sure they do, but if the changes are for the worse… I find the new WordPress very awkward, and Ravelry gives me a headache whenever I use the new version. Some people have had far worse reactions. And they are taking the ‘classic’ version away at the end of March.

Yes, ithe new gubbins are dreadful and no I don’t use the block editor for much the same reasons; not to mention that it takes twice as long to load/amend on our rural connection than the classic editor.
I have made various serious tries on the new interface but didn’t like its restrictions and it’s over-clever approach; it needs paring down a lot. The flashing/teasing availability of parts of the interface is mostly a sad failure to take into account the broad spread of age/ability/interests that make up their user market. Sad, but there it is … The current habit of many user interfaces of moving something because you’ve just used it (eg eBay when you’ve looked at something puts it at the top of the page – but not always!) placing it in the ‘most recent’ section is just plain annoying. An ability for the user to drag it there if they choose would be much more natural, like loading up your own work tray. It they already allow for this then I’ve missed where it was and no longer want to try.

My WordPress work around is to create a new post, give it a title, then save it as a draft and x out of it. Then I pull up the blog again, click on the “W” in the upper left corner to get a drop-down menu and choose “WP Admin”. From the “Posts” menu, choose “All posts” which brings up a list of posts. Then I can go to the one that I just created and select “classic editor” and go from there. It’s called “The Columbus Method.” Going east by sailing west. I think WordPress changed things to make them easier to use on smart phones. It’s the revenge of the millennials. Resistance is Futile.

What I cannot understand is why anyone would want to edit each paragraph separately… I just want to type and stick in an occasional photo!

I hate the blocks! Not intuitive/friendly to use. They appear where I don’t want them and refuse to leave. However, I’m too lazy to make any effort to go anywhere else. So, blocks of doom it is!

I’m with you. I hate it when they start changing things around. WordPress did it, and I’m not doing well with that now. Pinterest did something and now I can’t even get into my account. Totally aggravating!!!!

I hated the Block editor, too, and used the Classic as long as I could. Eventually I bit the bullet and switched to Block editor; now I am used to it and it isn’t a big deal. It’s still more work than Classic, imnsho, but it’s okay.
I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet as well…
I will say I’ve NEVER met an update I liked. They always seem to give with one hand and take away with the other…
